A Note From The Studio
Hi! I'm Ginny, owner of Green Dot Dyes, where I collaborate with my mom, Kitty, and my friend Jen to create one-of-a-kind tie-dyed apparel and home goods.
Like many small businesses these days, our studio has its roots in Covid, but not for the reason you might think. While other folks were turning to tie-dye in 2020 as a fun way to pass the time in quarantine, I was completely intimidated by the whole concept. However, the Montessori school where I worked had a cherished tradition of tie-dyeing class t-shirts, and I had a school newsletter that needed content. My solution? Face my fear and learn to tie-dye, so I could write an article encouraging our families to do the same. But at first, that seemed easier said than done. There was so much conflicting information about this mysterious craft -- where to start?
When my research led me to ice-dye, I knew I'd found my niche. No messy measuring or wasteful half-used dye bottles here -- this technique used dry dye powder sprinkled over (or under) ice cubes, and the results were pure magic. I couldn't get enough of the unpredictable color splits and intricate flows made by dye particles sliding down melting ice, and by January 2022, I had practiced enough to launch my Etsy shop. Jen was already an enthusiastic liquid tie-dyer, and we've been friends since our days of online gaming in the early 2000's (in fact, the Green Dot is a reference to one of our guild names), so it was a natural fit for her to contribute as well.
In 2023, we were able to expand into a line of hand-sewn specialty items, courtesy of my mom, who adapts vintage patterns (or creates her own!) to create one-of-a-kind hats, totes, home goods, wall hangings, and more.
The Story Behind the Green Dot
If your ears pricked up when I mentioned guild names, then hello, fellow gamer! :-)
Back in the dawn of the internet (aka 2003), our group of real-life friends began playing the massively-multiplayer online game Final Fantasy XI. Our guild symbol was a green pearl, and before long, we became known as the Green Dot Brigade. Fast-forward several years, and as the Green Dot Brigade explored more online worlds, we began collecting real-life friends along with internet guild members. Jen and I have been friends ever since we met in 2005-ish, during the Green Dot Brigade's World of Warcraft era.
